Recycle Your Tech
We recently did a tech cleanse, and it felt so good. We had two old Verizon flip phones and the tiniest Samsung phone ever, (remember when small phones were in style?). We have no idea why we were holding onto them, but they finally went to a good home. Verizon has the excellent HopeLine program. Their mission is heartwarming and important: "HopeLine from Verizon collects no-longer used wireless phones, batteries, chargers and accessories in any condition from any service provider to benefit victims and survivors of domestic violence. Donated phones are then turned into valuable resources for nonprofit organizations and agencies that support domestic violence victims and survivors nationwide." Just be sure you look up how to completely delete, wipe and reset your phone before donating it.
Laptop recycling was also on our to-do list. We had an old PC laptop which we had already backed-up our data from. We made an appointment online (important tip!) with the Best Buy Geek Squad so they could completely wipe and reset the hard-drive before submitting it to their recycling program. If you have personal information on your laptop, it's smart to work with a professional to ensure someone can't install software on your device to retrieve files you thought you had deleted. Best Buy is actually a convenient place for a range of appliance and electronics recycling.
Finally our old, (and very heavy!), first Macbook was also happily recycled through Apple's Renew Program which you can access online or in any Apple store. We earned a $42 gift card, (yes you read that right, because the Macbook was from 2009!). We ended up putting our gift card to good use at the Apple store and purchased the Edwin the Duck Learning Toy for some of the special little people in our lives. (It's an app-connected smart toy!)
We'd say, overall, our personal tech recycling initiative was a hug win-win. It also supplemented our previous initiative to digitize our old VHS and cassette tapes through Legacybox, (they offer great deals if you sign up for their newsletter).
Recycling tech is cool and easy. You can do it. We believe in you. And, just think what you can do to the tech junk drawer once you clear it out...
