Netflix...I Love You - Wet Hot American Summer (2015)
A month ago while flipping the channels, one of our team excitedly settled on watching 2001 comedy, Wet Hot American Summer. All of us hadn't heard of this cult favorite likely because it was mostly popular among the kids who used to go to summer camp in Maine (which is a SLIVER of the U.S. population). We admittedly, had a passing interest in seeing big names stars like Paul Rudd, Bradley Cooper and Amy Poehler, along with a host of indie and feature film actors, in the ensemble cast. The film, in a nut-shell, is a comedy about a group of counsellors and kids, set over one day of camp. It was funny, and we get why it cultivated a cult following, but we didn't think we were the target demographic.
Fast forward to July 2015 - Netflix released 8 episodes of Wet Hot American Summer. The entire season takes place on the first day of camp - in other words, the series is a prequel to the 2001 film. The best part - all of the same actors are back - that's right, people well into their 40s, and in some cases 50s, are playing teenagers in a slapstick comedy. It's like an extended "Saturday Night Live" skit except it's just a day at Camp Firewood. Yes, it's bizarre, and hilarious. Absurdist comedy reigns supreme. You should probably watch it tonight.
