Netflix I Love You...The British Invasion: Sherlock & Ripper Street

Netflix I Love You...The British Invasion: Sherlock & Ripper Street

British shows and films have long been beloved staples on Netflix. Here are two of our favorite murder-mysteries.

Sherlock
Benedict Cumberbatch (Imitation Game) stars as Sherlock in modern day London with Martin Freeman (Bilbo Baggins from The Hobbit) as Dr. Watson. The dialogue and creative story lines will transfix you. Sherlock is able to scan a crime scene and construct a narrative on what the victim ate and what type of dog he has at home - all by paying attention to minutiae (think sauce stain on a cheek and dog hairs on pant cuffs). The twists in the plot will make you pay attention for the entire episode, like a deputy detective. The creepy Sherlock nemesis, Moriarty, will make your skin crawl with the weird ways he manipulates people. It's the perfect hero to villain ratio in this clever show. #TeamSherlock

Ripper Street
It's East London in the late 1880s right after the Jack the Ripper killings. There's a string of murders around Whitechapel (district in East London) - is the killer back? Ripper Street offers heart-pounding stories centered on front-line police work. The series doesn't just explore copy-cat Ripper killings, but a range of crime and murders that plague London. (Tip: If you are squeamish don't watch the graphic autopsy scenes!) The lead role is wonderfully acted by Matthew Macfadyen also known as Mr. Darcy to Keira Knightley's Elizabeth Bennet in the 2005 Pride and Prejudice movie. (He was also on the amazing spy drama MI-5 which ran 2002-2011.) Macfadyen plays Detective Inspector, Edmund Reid - a man who is obsessed with his work. This is a series you should not miss. Excellent writing and nicely paced story lines keep you gripping the edge of your seat.

Now grab a cuppa and a biscuit while you binge-watch these Netflix gems.
