Netflix...I Love You
During the long and cold East Coast winter, we developed a close relationship with our Netflix account. But, it doesn't matter what season it is, Netflix always offers up a tray of goodies for your viewing pleasure. But, how do you wade through the curated lists? To help you get to the Netflix "gold", we're starting a regular feature with our curated picks for you. Here's what we currently love:
Velvet (2013 -): Spanish drama set in the 1950s/60s. The plot centers on a high-end, fashion department store, Velvet, in Madrid. It's a Romeo and Juliet-esque storyline about the son of the storeowner and the seamstress he loves. Think telenovela meets VERY attractive actors, with Lucille Ball comedy chops. Add some romance and classy clothing to contribute to the glamorous episodes. When things gets a little cheesy, the show addresses serious topics that surprise you: class dynamics, adultery, murder, deceit; the list goes on. There's also an amazing actor playing a Paris-trained, Spanish designer, named, De La Riva, who injects joy into every scene he's in. Really...what more do you need? Did we mention it's en Español? (with subtitles of course). On top of a twisting and turning plot, the clothing in every scene is intoxicating and dare we say gives Mad Men's style a run for its money. If a clothing brand did a line inspired by the series, we would buy it.
Fashion + Glamour = Velvet. Thank your Netflix.
