Grab Your Polo Shirt, Madras Jacket and Yellow Trousers - It's Time to Get Preppy
We went to a very preppy school growing up. Think Lacoste alligators on polo shirts as part of the gym uniform. There is something enduring about preppy style. This point was driven home when we saw the recent New Yorker article, Stalking the Wild Madras Wearers of the Ivy League, about, among other things, the original Japanese 1965 photography book, Take Ivy. The book chronicled preppy American style on Ivy League campuses. Give yourself 15 minutes to read the article - fascinating. We'll let you in on a little secret. You don't have to go to J.Crew for enduring preppy style. There are a host of amazing Japanese companies, around the world, that offer you a cornucopia of options. One of our favorites is Kamakura Shirts. They have, among other things, a Vintage Ivy shirt collaboration with Graham Marsh, the author of The Ivy Look. Next time you are in NYC, visit Kamakura's Madison Avenue flagship (their first store outside of Japan) or their Brookfield Place location. Can't get to New York or Japan? Don't worry, you can shop online. The craftsmanship is stellar - hand-made ties and Japanese fabric. If you are lucky enough to visit one of their stores, be prepared for some excellent customer service. One more thing we love is their holiday ties. Preppy style with a cheerful seasonal twist.
